Embracing the Unknown
“But I’m afraid of what could happen.” We put so much emphasis on words like “could” or “might” when chasing our dreams. We also lean heavily on phrases like “but…” and get stuck in a stalemate with a big case of the ‘buts’. And no, I’m not talking about Sir Mix-A-Lot’s classic tune—we’re dealing with a different kind of big buts.
Personal Insight: Facing the ‘Buts’
Since my diagnosis and on the path to healing, I have spent a lot of time in self-reflection. A pattern I recognized and worked on shifting was constantly questioning instead of taking positive action. Our minds create stories to keep us in our comfort zones. We feel stuck and hesitant to give it a shot. For me, this realization was forced upon me, and I’m grateful for it. I hope you can act before something forces your hand.
Embracing Potential
If we look at our lives, we see a fine line between all the buts, coulds, and mights that shape our journey. These words show up at pivotal times, knocking on your door with a new kid in the neighborhood named Potential, asking you to come out and play. How often do you go out and play? Or do you judge potential before you even step out the door?
We must learn that just because we think something could be bad doesn’t mean it is. Sure, something unexpected might happen, but isn’t that the point of growth? Yes, a few buts may show up at your door too, but what if you look at them with curiosity? Instead of seeing “but” as negative, view it as empowering. Like, “But this time it may be different,” or “But you’ll never know if you don’t try!”
Embracing Adventure
You sell yourself short if you think life is best met by turning away all the buts, coulds, and mights that come knocking. Our problem in life is we forget the magic of playing. Seeing the world through the eyes of a child and the endless potential it holds starts by yelling back into the house, “I’ll be back, going to see where this leads me, and I’ll be back when the streetlights come on!”
Your life is an endless adventure, but you must be willing to be the adventurer. Explore the mountain of you so you have no regrets about what could have been. Instead, rejoice that what you thought might happen never did, and be thrilled when you think of all the buts—especially “But I found myself.” Now, get out there and play!
